Every UAE resident is required to renew the resident visa before its date of expiry. The validity of the Emirates ID ceases to exist after the expiry of the UAE residence visa. Hence the visa renewal procedures are mandatory.

A resident has to renew the UAE resident visa within 30 days after the date of expiry. The GDFRA of the concerned Emirate provides a 30 days grace period to accomplish the renewal procedure.
After this grace period it is illegal to live in the Emirates without renewing the visa. Any attempt to continue without renewing the residence visa is considered as an offence and it may attract fines or other legal complications. The fine amount starts from AED 25/day.
Visa renewal prior to the date of expiry is possible by obtaining the permission of the GDFRA of the concerned Emirate.
